The Pollinator Garden

(Creation Care)

During the growing season of 2025 we converted the small patch of vegetable garden at Spring Garden Church into one that focuses on providing food and habitat for a wide range of pollinators like bees, butterflies, and other insects. Instead of vegetables, native plants were planted in this pollinator garden.

These are pictures of the tall coreopsis (Coreopsis tripteris) and the columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) which flourish in the pollinator garden.

Other native plants in the garden include swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), bee balm (Monarda fistulosa), Virgin bluebells (Mertensia virginica), Joe Pye (Eutrochium purpureum), asters, and goldenrod.

The chives and mint from our previous vegetable garden survived through the cold winter months. The chives mark the four corners of the pollinator garden with their vibrant lavender and violet blossoms. The mint is harvested by those who love mint tea.

Building and tending this garden is one way that Spring Garden Church participates in creation care. It is a space where people learn to love all of God’s creation, humans and non-human, living and non-living things. Providing habitat for pollinators is a practical way we can contribute to God’s work of healing the land.

Another goal of the garden is to provide a hospitable space for all who pass by the garden to pause in the midst of their busyness, to reflect, and even to be open to God at work in their lives.

During the spring of 2026, the garden was expanded into the church interior. Our hope is to create a warm and welcoming environment with indoor plants.

Helpers are warmly welcome to join us in caring for the garden by watering and weeding, even if you have just an hour or two a month. Contact garden@springgardenchurch.ca for more information.
